Gas Sensor Based on 2-D Nanomaterial

Gas sensors are essential apparatuses for assuring safety in industrial sectors by measuring harmful gases. Sensitivity, high selectivity, and high stability are the most important criteria for the absorber layer of gas sensors.

Regarding the unique properties of nanomaterials, those are considered the most fitting candidates to fulfill the requirements for gas sensors. The critical point is that 0-D and 1-D nanomaterials are not suitable for gas sensors according to their electronic confinement effects, so 2-D nanomaterials are left to be utilized.

The working principles in these adsorbent layers are based on the transfer of electrical charge between the gas molecule and the adsorbent layer. After absorbing the desired gas in the adsorbent layer, by measuring the electrical resistance of the adsorbent layer, the concentration of gas in the environment can be found. Regarding, higher-level nanomaterials are better options, and 2-D nanomaterials are superior to other nanomaterials.

On the other hand, the effective parameters in these sensors, including sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and response time, are also related to the surface of the adsorbent layer and improve these parameters in nanomaterials with higher levels as 2-D.
