The leakage of explosive gases has been counted as one of the vicious threats to oil and gas extractions and refineries for many years. The leakage could cause ghastly risks to humans and infrastructure in these sectors.
These hazards increase significantly if several explosive gases are present simultaneously in an environment. Some strategies and solutions have been introduced for real-time monitoring of those gases, the methods that continuously update the measurement to detect any and alarm if, although those techniques are limited to identify one gas type per each sensor.
Currently, the need for multi-gas detection has increased, and it seems the advancement of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology is a proper fulfillment.
The two available gas detection sensors, the pellistor and the NDIR sensor cannot simultaneously monitor different gases. They may even interfere with the presence of a particular gas.
Meanwhile, sensors that have recently been developed based on MEMS technology can detect 12 gases simultaneously. These developments could reduce potential hazards in the field of explosive gases.
